At Valerie’s 20-week ultrasound, doctors noticed issues with her baby’s heart. She and her husband, John, were sent to Advocate Children’s Hospital – Oak Lawn because of its nationally recognized pediatric cardiology program. Thanks to a generous gift from the Busking family, the pediatric cardiac team had recently acquired a fetal echocardiogram, which detects heart problems before a baby is born. With the device, doctors were able to diagnose Clayton, in utero, with Tetralogy of Fallot, a rare and critical condition caused by a combination of congenital heart defects. Doctors closely monitored Val through the rest of her pregnancy and had a care plan ready for Clayton when he was born.
